Santoor legend Shivkumar Sharma passed away in Mumbai

Famous South Asian musician and lyricist Pandit Shivkumar Sharma has passed away in Mumbai. He was 84 years old. According to The Indian Express, he had been suffering from kidney-related problems for the last six months and was on dialysis. He died of cardiac arrest.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences. Modi shared on Twitter, “The demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma has made our cultural world poorer. He made Santoor popular globally.” “His music will continue to fascinate future generations. I remember my conversations with him. Sympathy for his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Shabana Azmi also expressed grief. “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing away of Ustad Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma. His melodious music will of course remain in our hearts but is tinged with the pain of his loss. My deepest condolences to the family,” she wrote on the micro-blogging website. .

Sharma gave the santur, once a lesser-known instrument of Jammu and Kashmir, a classical status and enhanced it with other, more traditional and popular instruments like sitar and sarod. As a part of Shiva-Hari, he played the flute legend Pt. Hari Prasad gave music with Chaurasia.
