In the world of computers, Dell laptops are some of the most popular around. From their affordable Inspiron models to their high-end Alienware ones, there’s something for everyone when it comes to Dell laptops. But sometimes, you might want a different kind of laptop to suit your specific needs; that’s where the Dell Precision 7730 comes in. With its powerful components and multi-core design, it’s a great choice if you need something to perform heavy-duty tasks like running virtual machines or developing software.
Background: A Brief History of Dell
Dell is a tech company that provides computer systems and other related technology. The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell with his $1,000 investment from age 17. To this day, Michael Dells maintains 100% ownership of the company. They offer products for both personal and commercial use, such as desktops, laptops, workstations (as it says on their site), software and peripherals. I have personally never used their products but I have been told by others that they are very good quality and cost-effective compared to similar products made by Apple or HP. One downside that might come up is if you need customer service; they don’t offer support outside of what is available on their website or phone numbers which can make things difficult when needed.
Overview: Form and Function
The Dell Precision 7730 is the first workstation class machine in a new slimmer, sleeker design. Boasting a powerful 6-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and NVIDIA Quadro P3000 GPU, this model is designed for power users who demand both speed and precision. The chassis features an integrated handle and sound system that are both specially tuned for a more immersive experience that can be played through an external device like speakers or headphones.
Other new additions include 3 USB Type-C ports for up to 5x faster data transfer speeds, 4 USB 3.0 ports for fast data storage access, next-generation UHD screens with higher contrast ratios for increased visibility in brighter environments, and IR Camera with Tobii eye tracking built into the display.
Design
The monitor also has a customizable ambient light setting, which subtly changes its color temperature and brightness levels. There’s a digital stylus that lets you take notes onscreen. It includes an HDMI port, four USB ports, and three display ports that are full-size in addition to the Thunderbolt 3 port. The HDMI port supports multiple displays so you can have one of each type simultaneously connected if desired. That makes it easy for video editors, for example, who may want their editing tools on one screen while their work is up on another screen in front of them. The standard version starts at $2500 and can go up from there depending on configuration needs and upgrades like more RAM or storage space.
Display
While there are many laptops on the market, many people might not be aware of all the specs a laptop offers. One model that is an industry leader in the Dell Precision 7710. This particular laptop has a durable design and premium look and feel. It also offers the power of an 8th Gen Intel CoreTM i7-8750H CPU as well as 32GB DDR4 RAM which is powerful enough for any task that may arise while working on your computer. The graphics card can handle things like photo editing or video processing with ease. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU means smooth, lag-free gameplay at high frame rates (60 frames per second) so you never miss a detail in your favorite games.
Ports & Connectivity
The device provides a backlit keyboard with 19mm key travel and soft-touch membrane keys. An integrated 1MP webcam, microphone, dual speakers, and a dedicated 1.5 mm headphone/mic jack are included for all your audio needs. A 4-in-1 media card reader is present as well. Wireless options include both 802.11ac (a/b/g/n) as well as Bluetooth 4.2 LE connectivity, so you’ll be able to sync up your peripherals no matter where you go!
Storage Section
All configurations feature a 512GB PCIe SSD and a 1TB 7200 RPM SATA HDD. It should be noted that the 1TB hard drive is split into two partitions, one of which is pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. The other partition has 40GB set aside for system recovery purposes; this may be too small if you’re someone who typically stores files on your local disk for regular backups.
Features
The Dell Precision 7730 gives you the power and versatility of a mobile workstation. Unlike traditional laptops, it has plenty of room for a powerful desktop-grade Intel Core i7 processor and up to 64GB of RAM, which is enough power for heavy multitasking or graphical design software. The display features Full HD with In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology and great color accuracy at 120% sRGB, making it perfect for video editing, 3D modeling, CAD work, and anything that needs accurate color representation. It also comes with an Nvidia Quadro P2000 graphics card that’s specially designed for professional graphics and engineering apps.
Performance – The Benchmarks
The battery life is also an area where we see improvement. On the Dell Precision 7720, I averaged about 2 hours and 12 minutes with everything running at full tilt. On the new version, that time has grown by about 50% to 3 hours and 25 minutes. The average power draw also has increased, but not in a concerning way. Running Furmark for 10 minutes causes my internal battery’s charge to drop from 97% down to 92%.
The last area I’ll touch on is probably one of the most important in my opinion: noise. With more powerful hardware comes more heat output and as a result, you’ll hear your machine pumping out quite a bit of hot air at times.
Performance – Battery Life Testing
HP claims that the HP ZBook Studio x360 G5 will last up to 11 hours and 57 minutes on a single charge. In our testing, we found that this was relatively accurate, as we were able to run it for 12 hours and 20 minutes before having to recharge it. It ran in idle mode throughout testing which reduced its battery life expectancy. When under heavy use, you should be able to get about five hours of battery life with 4K videos being edited in Premiere Pro CC. The Intel Core i7 8550U processor has been designed with a higher efficiency chip architecture that helps save on power consumption while also improving performance capabilities at the same time.
Conclusion
The new, powerful laptop from Dell’s line of professional desktop computers is a perfect option for any heavy-duty workload. With its graphics processing and excellent overall computing performance, this machine makes an attractive choice for CAD/CAM work or video editing, as well as less intensive tasks like internet browsing. The excellent sound quality also makes it great for music production and content creation, in general. The number of ports on the Dell Precision 7730 can be a little bit daunting at first, but their purpose becomes clear with just a bit of research. And while the price may seem steep at first glance, you have to remember that this laptop is made to last!
